Seafarers Certificate
Based on the medical examination findings, a medical examination for the eyes shall be issued to a seafarer by the eye examiner and must be signed by both the examiner and examinee.
If the eye examiner imposes restrictions to a seafarer ( I e. the job the seafarer will perform, trade area etc) these restrictions should be reflected on the certificate.
If an examinee found temporarily unfit or found with diminished visual acuity then if possible ( in case of engine room works) examiner may advise him aided vision or spectacles. But if the examinee found with abnormal color vision then he or she shall be explained and would be announced permanently unfit.
Eye Examinations
Seafarers are required to undergo necessary eye examinations to remain safe personally as well as far the safe operation of the ship.

Seafarers on deck duty must commit this eligibility, but for engine room operations a flexible result is granted as per maritime law.
2. Visual Field ExaminationÂ
By this examination examiner maps the area that can a seafarer see both centrally and peripherally. This test I done by Confrontation Visual Field Test or Amsler Grid Test.
3. Color Vision ExaminationÂ
This test is done by the Ishihara Chart. This is very important test to examine the seafarer’s ability to detect the the distant colourful port lights.
4. General Eye ExaminationsÂ
This is done by Slit Lamp, Ophthalmoscope etc to find out any abnormalities to the eyes of a seafarer.
